Our water heater recently stopped igniting. After checking the pilot assembly for any obvious reasons for failure, we deduced that the ignitor for the gas valve was bad. After ordering an ignitor button, we were able to get a spark again.
Now the problem lies with gas control. When I turn the knob on the gas valve to "Pilot" and press down on the knob, I am suppose to be able to hear gas being send through the pilot assembly, but I can no longer hear gas being ran through.
I am not sure what happened. We did have a plumber out here initially to trouble shoot the problem and he completely took apart the pilot assembly and I put it all back together trying to avoid paying 350 for such a task.
It is also worth mentioning that my father was able to manually send gas through by taking the cover plate off of the gas valve and use a voltmeter on two of the prongs within the gas valve and pressing the pilot button from within.
I'm not totally sure what he did, but it was sketchy at best and would not permanently solve the problem at hand.
