I have steam oil heat and I'm interested in changing to gas. I had a few contractors over and they gave me a couple of options. One was to replace my oil fired boiler with a gas fired steam boiler. Another option is to convert my current steam system to gas hot water keeping the cast iron baseboard radiators. The contractor told me this is possible because of how the system now is currently set up. He said it "looks like when the set this system up they were trying to make it a "forced system". There is mostly just cooper piping running through the house which is not usually used with steam heat. I am interested in hot water because I can zone it, finally have heat in my finished basement, and not have the loud banging from the pipes. My concern is that the system won't work properly, that the current copper piping has gunk or debris in it from the oil heat steam through out the years of use might not allow the water system to work properly or even damage the the new boiler. I just need to know if it's a good idea to do this, is it going to give me problems in the future. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated in helping me to make my decision. Thank you
